San Jose Crash Leaves One Dead, Driver Asleep at the Wheel

San Jose, CALIFORNIA – An Orange County man died in a one-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning. The 64-year-old passenger was sleeping in the back seat of a box truck when the driver swerved off the road and the vehicle overturned.

California Highway Patrol received a report at 3:47 am of the overturned truck. The vehicle was blocking the two right lanes and the shoulder of northbound 101. By 4 am, the accident closed all lanes of traffic.

The truck was traveling northbound on highway 101 and the crash happened near McKee Road. The driver, a 67-year-old man also from Orange County, said they had been on the road for several hours after driving from Southern California. He told police he “dozed off” just before the crash when the truck veered to the right embankment and flipped over.

CHP detoured traffic but by 6 am one lane of 101 was again open. By 9:42 all lanes were open. One lane remained closed through the afternoon for guardrail repairs.

The driver sustained major injuries and the passenger was killed. CHP is investigating the accident. It is unclear if the passenger was wearing a seat belt at the time. The names of the involved parties have not yet been released.
