Two Roads, 76 Deaths: New Data On Fresno County’s Most Dangerous Roads

Key Takeaways

  • State Route 180 and Manning Avenue killed 76 people in Fresno County over five years. SR-180 recorded 56 deaths, while Manning Avenue, a two-lane farm arterial, recorded 20.
  • Manning Avenue has had more fatal crashes since 2023 than any city street in the county. Thirteen people died, nearly double the toll on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno.
  • On Blackstone, the fatalities are mostly pedestrians. Eleven of the 15 killed since 2021 were on foot.
  • Rural roads saw 45% of the county’s crashes but 58% of its deaths. Speed, darkness, and distance from trauma care make them deadlier.
  • None of these roads appear on statewide danger rankings. High-profile lists focus on freeways; Fresno County’s deadliest miles are only two-lane.

The Roads That Don’t Make the Lists

Ask which roads are the most dangerous in California, and you’ll hear freeway names: I-5, I-15, or the 99. Fresno County’s worst roadways don’t seem dangerous at all. A state route through orchards and a farm avenue named Manning.

Together, State Route 180 and Manning Avenue have had 76 fatal car accidents between 2021 and 2025. Neither appears on any statewide danger ranking.

We analyzed every police-reported injury crash in Fresno County from 2021 through 2025 using the Transportation Injury Mapping System, UC Berkeley’s statewide crash database, and ranked the county’s roads by the number of deaths.

Below, we explain the county’s three deadliest roads, the farm avenue with more fatalities than the city’s busiest avenue, and the surprising pedestrian statistics for Blackstone Ave.

The County’s Deadliest Roads

Deaths by road, Fresno County, 2021–2025.

Highway 180 accidents saw 56 deaths across 2021-2025, spread along its full run from the west-side farm grid through the city and up toward Kings Canyon. It logged 54 fatal crashes in that span, including 15 in 2023.

Manning Avenue is a straight, flat, two-lane arterial through Parlier, Selma, and the raisin country south of Fresno. It surprisingly recorded 283 injury crashes and 20 deaths, with 13 of those deaths since 2023, the most for streets inside the city of Fresno that year.

High speeds cause roughly one in five Manning Avenue crashes, and the road’s mix of farm-labor traffic, trucks, and unlit rural intersections does the rest.

Blackstone Avenue – Pedestrians Beware

Blackstone Avenue holds the grim title of Fresno’s most deadly road due to the 15 deaths since 2021. But the detail that should reshape how Fresno thinks about its main commercial strip is that 11 of those were pedestrians.

Six-plus lanes, long gaps between crossings, transit stops set mid-block, and heavy nighttime activity are all contributing factors. Citywide, more than 80% of Fresno County’s pedestrian deaths happen at night.

Why Rural Miles are More Dangerous

Since 2023, unincorporated roads have accounted for 45% of the county’s injury crashes and 58% of deaths. The mechanics are consistent: speeds above 55 mph, no lighting, no median, and long emergency response times.

How RMD Law Can Help After a Rural Road Crash

1. Reconstruct crashes with no witnesses

Rural crashes often happen with nobody watching. Vehicle event data recorders, debris analysis, and roadway evidence usually tell the story anyway. We preserve all of them.

2. Identify commercial and agricultural defendants

Commercial vehicles like farm trucks, labor transport vans, and equipment come with commercial insurance and comply with federal safety rules. These are facts that change both investigation and recovery.

3. Examine the road itself

Unlit intersections, missing rumble strips, and faded markings can support a claim against a public entity. Those claims carry a six-month deadline, so every minute counts.

4. Handle wrongful death claims

Seventy-six deaths on two roads mean 76 families with potential claims. We shoulder the legal process while they grieve.

5. Maximize every available policy

Rural crash victims often face underinsured drivers. We map umbrella policies, employer coverage, and your UM/UIM benefits and make sure prompt medical care is documented from day one.

The Quiet Roads are the Loud Statistic

Fresno County’s deadliest roads look like every other stretch of Valley farmland, right up until the numbers come in: 56 deaths on a state route, 20 on a farm avenue, and 11 pedestrians on a city strip. Lists that rank California’s dangerous roads don’t usually mention these three, but the grieving families will always remember them.

FAQs

What is the most dangerous road in Fresno County?

By total deaths, State Route 180 had 56 from 2021 through 2025. By deaths per mile of two-lane road, Manning Avenue is the standout, with 20 deaths, including 12 since 2023.

Why is Manning Avenue so deadly?

It combines 55-plus-mph rural speeds, dark intersections, heavy farm labor and truck traffic, and long emergency response distances. About one in five crashes is due to speed.

What makes Blackstone Avenue dangerous for pedestrians?

Width, speed, and crossing gaps. Eleven of the 15 people killed on Blackstone since 2021 were pedestrians; countywide, more than 80% of pedestrian deaths happen in darkness.

Can a road’s design support my injury claim?

Sometimes. A documented pattern of similar crashes can support a dangerous-condition claim against the responsible public entity. California requires those claims to be filed within six months, so early legal help matters.

Where does this data come from?

From SWITRS, California’s statewide crash database, via UC Berkeley’s Transportation Injury Mapping System. The 2024 and 2025 figures are provisional.
